The Federal Government, under President Bola Tinubu, is preparing to introduce a large-scale electric vehicle transportation system in North-East Nigeria.
In a statement released on Sunday, Presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga confirmed that FEC had recently approved a contract for the supply of ten 17-seater electric buses.
Providing further details, Onanuga stated that Bluecrest Integrated Concept Limited secured a N2.9 billion contract to deliver these ten electric buses within six months.
Additionally, Messrs Mutual Commitment Company Limited will supply 4,000 e-tricycles for N49.6 billion within nine months, while Shanghai Integrated Infrastructure Development has been contracted to deliver 3,000 e-tricycles for N37.2 billion. Another 3,000 e-tricycles will be supplied by Sinoma Investment International Limited. Each tricycle has a seating capacity for nine passengers and a driver.
Messrs HNCEGC has been awarded a N16.3 billion contract to supply 100 BYD Dolphin EVs, 100 BYD Qin Plus EVs, and 37 BYD Yuan Plus EVs. Meanwhile, Messrs KB Laman Motors Nigeria Limited will install charging stations for the e-buses and e-tricycles under a separate contract worth N8.4 billion.
Onanuga also noted that the North East Development Commission will fund the project as part of efforts to reduce carbon emissions and improve energy efficiency in the region.
President Tinubu had initially approved the procurement of electric vehicles in October last year and later inspected sample vehicles, charging stations, and battery systems.
